Despite being granted permission to play in Qatar last year, Israeli tennis player Shahar Peer who is ranked #48 in the world was denied acess to participate in Dubai this year. Although UAE refrenced the recent Arab Israeli conflict in Gaza as reason to prevent Peer from entry , Frenchwomen tennis player Amelie Mauresmo commmented "I think sport should be above issues like that to do with religion and wars and whatever. I'm surprised." Quite frankly, so are we too Amelie. It's even a risk for the Israeli player to play in Dubai as well. Look what happened in Munich when the Israeli athletes were kidnapped during the 1972 Olympics. Even if the Knicks wanted to draft Osama Bin Laden's grand nephew into the NBA, few would contest. Don't worry Shahar Peer , you will play on and the

Iranian women competed in tennis for the first time since 1972, 7 years prior to the revolution. They played a tie with Hong Kong at a neutral site in Australia. Since Iranian law requires all women to be covered from head to toe in public, the players wore their hijab on the courts where the temperature was near 100 degrees fahrenheit. If I wore a sweatsuit on a 100 degree day I'd be sweating befoe I even started playing. They lost bad.

Hong Kong defeated Iran 3-0 in Australia.

R1 Z Yang (HKG) def S TABATABAEI (IRI) 6-0 6-0

R2 L Zhand (HKG) def G Torkaman (IRI) 6-0 6-0

R3 P Sher/ H Wu (HKG) def M Najarian/ S Tabatabaei (IRI) 6-2 7-5

The media commened the Iranian effort and made them feel how it was an honor and historical day for their country . I say you gotta be in it to win it. They should have put up a better fight. And I love the players name tabataba. If Jamaica had a bobsled team, Iran should have a womens tennis team. For the recored, this wasn't the most lobsided win in womens tennis. In 1999, Israel beat Iceland 6-0 6-0, 6-0 6-0, and 6-0 6-0. That's what you call a can of ass wippin'. In  tennis terms, Iceland got hexabagled. Israel put 'em on ice. (See pictures below)

After taking time off from tennis for personal reasons, Venus has decided to return. You'd have to wonder if her sister Serena played a role in this decision. Whatever the reason, her return is beneficial to both Williams sisters and womens tennis as a whole. And ofcourse, Venus wants to defend her title in Wimbledon next month because she is the Queen of Grass !! Cool

To celebrate the Sony Ericsson Miami Open and the grand opening of Gansevort South Hotel , Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal played an exhibition match on the surface of a pool.  An underwater crew built two invisible platforms at each end of the pool using acrylic sheets and tubes. What's next? Tennis in space? Tennis on ice? Be careful what you wish for.

Despite an unconfirmed rumor that she will accept a wild card in Bogota this week, Sesil Karatacheva will bring a world ranking of 382 into Memphis as a Wild Card recipeint in the Qualifying draw next week .  It will be her first WTA event since her 2 year anti doping suspension expired .  She was named ITF player of the month in January for winning 2 out of 3 tournaments she competed in and only dropping 3 sets. A former French Open Quarter Finalist in 2005 at age 15, Karatancheva should continue to surge in the rankings and make headlines before the year is through . She is a rising star with endless potential . Perhaps the next comeback kid, just as tennis witnessed with Jennifer Capriati .

On January 11th, Bulgarian Teen Sesil Karatancheva was once again eligible by the ITF for competition . Wasting no time to get back on track, she entered a $25k ITF tournament in Arizona and won 3 matches (in a day!!) to qualify into the main draw. She won the tournament and entered another 25k tournament in La Quinta, California the following week, and once again won 3 matches to qualify for the tournament and eventually going onto win as well. After only 2 weeks back in tennis with a 16-0 record already , she has recieved legal pressure from the Bulgarian Sports Federation for not reporting to national duty for Bulgaria in their Fed Cup tie against Hungary . That would have been heroic of her to have played and won the tie for her nation but it is understandable that she needed to re gain rankings and earnings.

France has three rising prospects in Aravene Rezai, Alize Cornet , and Pauline Parmentier. And currently with world rankings of #58 , #56 , and #54 respectively  , they are indeed  'Trois Filles Pas Comme Les Autre' (Three Girls Like No Other ).

Aravane Rezai, is a 20 year old Persian who had victories over headliners Venus Williams and Maria sharapova leading up to the French Open last year.  She also beat one of the top 3 French players missing Fed Cup this week Tatiana Golovin at the Australian Open last week. A match that was filled with drama but over shadowed by the Lindsay Davenport - Maria Sharapova match. Kind of irony that French coach Georges Goven did not select Aravane as a replacement in the lineup of France's Fed Cup tie against China this week.
